Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

I watched Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) at the weekend and despite hearing and reading that it wasn’t that good, I really enjoyed it.

I’m always going on about how bad the DC movies are compared to Marvel and how they just don’t seem to have it together like Marvel do. It feels like they’re so desperate to compete that they rush their films out and they end up being rubbish as a result.

This movie, Wonder Woman (2017) and Man of Steel (2013) are the exceptions though (for me at least).

If you haven’t seen it, it stars Gal Gadot reprising her role as Wonder Woman, Chris Pine (Star Trek), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) and Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) among others.

This time (as you probably guessed from the title) it’s set in 1984 and Wonder Woman has to stop a businessman whose desire for power sends the world down a path of destruction when he obtains an ancient artefact that grants wishes.

Kristen Wiig (who I’m used to seeing in comedy roles) is good as Diana’s lonely and insecure work colleague who goes through a “Selina Kyle-in-Batman-Returns” type transformation, and Pedro Pascal does a good job too as the main “villain”.

It’s two and a half hours long but it kept my attention and was really enjoyable.

One thing it’s been praised for is its “escapist qualities” and I totally agree. It’s just good entertainment and pretty much does what it says on the tin.

It’s available to rent on Sky TV now and I’m sure it’s streaming in other places too.

Seen it? What do you think? 🤔
