Yet another movie franchise that didn’t know when to call it a day is The Mummy (1999-2008).
Don’t get me wrong, I like the first two films. Sure the CGI is a bit dated now but they’re easy and fun to watch and have that kind of, likeable Indiana Jones type quality. However, like most franchises they didn't know when to stop!
The last film, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) was terrible!
There are so many things wrong with it I’m surprised it even got made.
Between Rachel Weisz’s character, Evie being recast to (in my opinion) completely the wrong actor, to a not very likeable actor now playing their much older son (who is only 13 years younger than the actors playing his parents and who now has an American accent..?)
Throw in an over use of CGI due to Jet Lee not being available for filming for much of the movie and you’ve got the mistake that is the third instalment!
And, breeeaatthee.....
To be fair, this film had a different writer and director attempting to re-capture the magic of the previous two films and that’s always going to be a challenge.
There was actually meant to be a fourth film called The Mummy 4: Rise of the Aztecs.
The main characters from the third movie had signed on and it was due to star Antonio Banderas as the main antagonist. Fortunately (or not) it got scrapped and was rebooted as another bad movie, The Mummy (2017) starring Tom Cruise...
What do you think? Am I being too harsh or was the third Mummy terrible?
