The Descent (2005)

Last week I watched a film that I’ve kind of avoided for years.

The Descent (2005)

I’ve said before that I’m not a big fan of British films (for my own reasons, not because they’re not very good), and at the risk of sounding sexist, I think I also avoided this film because, knowing that it has an all female cast I guess I thought it was a bit of a chick flick - just not in the conventional sense.

I was so wrong...

I loved this film!

It actually came out the same year as a movie called The Cave (2005) which I have seen and which has a very similar story.

If you haven’t seen The Descent, it’s a kind of horror/thriller directed by Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers).

It’s about a group of adrenaline junkie friends that decide to explore an unexplored cave system in America.

After their path is blocked by a cave-in they become trapped - but that’s the least of their worries. They soon discovered they’re not alone in the dark and that strange bloodthirsty creatures that have been living down there for years are stalking them.

As much as the creatures are there to provide the horror element in this film, I have to admit I found the claustrophobia side of things much more terrifying. I’m not overly claustrophobic but seeing the characters squeezing into and crawling through tiny gaps with no knowledge of whether it led to a way out stressed me out!

This is a decent movie but definitely not one for those who have a fear of confined spaces! 😵

Seen it? What do you think? 🤔
