The Crow (1994)

I got an urge to watch one of my favourite movies last night. I hadn't seen it for a few years and wasn't sure how it would stand up to my memory of it. Fortunately though, a good film is a good film no matter how long it's been since you last watched it.

The Crow (1994)

For anyone that hasn’t seen it, it's a supernatural revenge thriller starring Brandon Lee (Bruce Lee’s son), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), Michael Wincott (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), David Patrick Kelly (The Warriors), Jon Polito (Gangster Squad), Michael Massee (Seven) and Tony Todd (Candyman) among others.

The film is based on the comic of the same name by James 0'Barr.

It was tragically Brandon Lee's last film.

This is what it's about:

A musician named Eric Draven (Lee), along with his fiancé, is murdered by a gang of thugs on Devil’s night (the night before Halloween). One year later a crow carries his soul back from the land of the dead for a chance to exact revenge on those responsible.

This is such a great movie! I literally watched it on repeat as a teenager and even had the movie poster on my bedroom wall for a few years.

I love these “good guy gets revenge on the bad guys” movies!

For the first time though I noticed how much it’s aged. That’s not a criticism, and if you haven’t seen it don’t let that put you off, I’ve just never noticed it until now. The soundtrack is very "90s grunge" so maybe that’s part of it.

There are so many great lines and scenes in this film! My personal favourite is when Eric Draven pays a visit to Gideon's Pawn Shop and quote's Edgar Allen Poe's classic poem, The Raven.

It’s such a shame that Brandon Lee never got to see the movie finished. It would’ve really catapulted his career, and who knows what other films he would’ve gone on to make.

Tragically Brandon was killed during the making of the film with only eight days of production left. While filming a scene in which his character is shot by one of the gang members, Lee was accidentally shot for real.

Unfortunately the gun used for the scene hadn’t been checked thoroughly and the “bullet” part of a dummy round used for a previous shot had become trapped in the barrel. When the blank round was fired, the force of it propelled the lodged dummy bullet tip out at a similar force to a real bullet and it struck Lee in the abdomen. He died during surgery later the same day.

Michael Massee who fired the gun and who plays Funboy in the movie took a year out of acting following the tragedy and never watched the film right up until his death in 2016.
