A movie that seems to go under the radar (at least I don’t hear many people talk about it) is the Mike Myers 90s comedy:
So I Married an Axe Murder (1993).
This film came out between Wayne’s World (1992) and Wayne’s World 2 (1993) and I guess because those films were so big, not to mention getting followed up a few years later with the first Austin Powers movie, it kind of got missed..?
It stars Mike Myers (Wayne’s World), Nancy Travis (Three Men and a Little Lady), Anthony LaPaglia (Annabelle: Creation), Alan Arkin (Edward Scissorhands) and Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction) to name just a few.
The film is about a poet named Charlie Mackenzie (Myers) who, every time a relationship starts to get serious, finds a reason to end it because he has a fear of commitment.
When he meets Harriet (Travis) and starts to fall in love with her, he becomes convinced that she’s “Mrs X” - an axe murderer he reads about in a paper who marries men and kills them on their honeymoon.
I watched this film loads growing up! It’s really funny and a great easy watch.
As well as playing the lead role, Mike Myers also plays his Scottish father (a hilarious character) and the supporting cast are brilliant, especially Alan Arkin as the super nice and laid back police captain. But it’s the late great Phil Hartman (Jingle All The Way) who steals the show for me as the Alcatraz tour guide, John “Vicky” Johnson. 😆
If you haven’t seen this film, do yourself a favour and watch it.
