Last weekend I crossed another movie off my “Films I should’ve seen by now but haven’t” list,
Open Range (2003).
My sister has been telling me to watch this film for years! She loves the soundtrack and made me a compilation CD of movie scores a few years back. It included a piece of music from this film by Michael Kamen.
I was visiting her at the weekend and she put it on so I could finally watch it.
I think one of the reasons I haven’t seen this film till now is because I’m not really a big fan of westerns. Having said that, I think back to all the westerns I’ve seen and I realise I’ve liked pretty much all of them so I guess I don’t really know what I’m talking about - I must be a fan of westerns! 😳
Anyway, it’s brilliant and I loved it!
If you haven’t seen it, it stars Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves), Robert Duvall (Days of Thunder), Annette Bening (American Beauty) and Michael Gambon (Harry Potter movies) among many others. Kevin Costner also directs.
Here’s what it’s about:
A cattle crew driving their herd across a large expanse of country are met with hostility by a wealthy land owner (Gambon) and the corrupt marshall of a local town.
After two of the crew are violently assaulted in the night, Boss Spearman (Duvall) and his cowhand Charley Waite (Costner) decide to make a stand against those responsible.
This is a great character based revenge movie. I love those kind of films! You actually care about the characters and you route for the good guys while wanted the bad guys to get what’s coming to them. It reminded me a lot of Unforgiven (1992).
It’s definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it. 👌
