Today’s Valentine's Day Movie Countdown romcom recommendation is:
Just Go with It (2011)
I’m a big Adam Sandler fan and with the exception of a couple, I’ve liked pretty much every film he’s done. I was never overly keen on Jennifer Anniston though, but between this movie and Horrible Bosses I came to like her.
This stars (you guessed it) Adam Sandler (Grown Ups), Jennifer Aniston (Horrible Bosses), Brooklyn Decker (Battleship) and Nicole Kidman (Australia) among others.
This is what it’s about:
Danny (Sandler), is a plastic surgeon and a “player” who uses a fake wedding ring to pick up girls. One night he meets the girl of his dreams and for once decides not to lie and puts the ring in his pocket. When she finds it the next morning he lies and tells her he’s going through a divorce and asks his assistant, Katherine (Anniston) to pose as his ex-wife.
Things get even more complicated when her kids blackmail him into taking them all on a “family vacation” to Hawaii, and he and Katherine start to realise their relationship might be more than professional.
This is easily one of my favourite romantic comedies. It’s really funny, and contrary to a scathing review I just read on Empire, the chemistry between Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston IS believable.
Nick Swardon (30 Minutes or Less) provides a few laughs as Dolph (the cousin who cons his way into a free vacation by posing as Jennifer Anniston’s character’s new German boyfriend) - but it’s 12 year old Bailee Madison (Bridge to Terabithia) who gives the stand out performance in this movie.
Is it predictable? Yes. Is it silly in places? Yes. Does Adam Sandler play pretty much the same character he plays in most of his movies? Yes.
Here’s the thing though, it’s just a movie and a bit of harmless, entertaining escapism. 😁👍
The soundtrack is also pretty good and features a few really cool mashups.👌
It’s currently streaming on Netflix and is also on Sky Cinema.
