Is There a Goonies Sequel in Development? The Sun Newspaper Seems to Think There Is…

I see a lot of fake, fan-made movie posters doing the rounds on social media. Usually they’re for a sequel that isn’t really happening, but people don’t bother to check, and just hit the share button adding to the viral nonsense and hysteria.

A friend of mine just sent me this latest image and I decided to do some digging to see if there was any truth behind it. It turns out there’s more to this one than most…

Rumours surrounding a Goonies sequel pop up every few years but fortunately (or unfortunately depending how you see it) no new movie ever materialises. Steven Spielberg himself said a few years back (while appearing on Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart: The Goonies episode) that they come up with a new idea every couple of years but none of them have ever been good enough (pun intended) to go ahead with due to the high bar set by the original. That implies that a sequel has always been a possibility, they’re just waiting for the right story.

Three days ago The Sun newspaper (yes I know, take it with a pinch of salt) reported that a sequel was indeed in development, claiming that “a source” had said:

“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead.

“The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.

“The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right.

“It’s likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless.

“The team who are going to be starting work on the project are so excited.

“It is early days but the youth adventure market is on fire, so they want to capitalise on this.

“The Goonies is 39 years old now and the idea that they can bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience has the team very excited.”

It’s important to remember that The Sun is a tabloid newspaper, so this latest “news” could be total b#llocks. Nonetheless, it’s got my curiosity...

I checked on Steven Spielberg’s profile on IMDb and a Goonies sequel isn’t currently listed among his 44 upcoming projects. I can’t see a sequel going ahead without his involvement, especially since it was he who came up with the original story for the 1985 movie, not to mention being Executive Producer on the film. Again though, that’s not confirmation that this isn’t happening.

Earlier this year Josh Brolin who played Brandon Walsh, the older brother of the film’s main protagonist Mikey, told Yahoo! Movies that he doesn’t see the point in a sequel to The Goonies. Still, with so many of the original cast still in the limelight to varying degrees, a reunion almost 40 years later would be pretty special if (and I stress the word IF) it was done right.

Unfortunately these legacy/belated sequels are rarely anything more than unimaginative and disappointing cash-ins on the movies from our youth that we hold so dear. Personally I hope it’s all nonsense (especially after the hugely disappointing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice last weekend).

What do you think? Would you be up for seeing The Goonies 2 or should Hollywood stop trampling on the legacy of these classic movies?

Let me know in the comments.
