Insomnia (2002)

In the comments of my One Hour Photo post on Facebook the other day a few people mentioned another Robin Williams film I hadn’t seen.

Insomnia (2002)

I watched it last night and you weren’t wrong, it’s really good! 👌

For those of you that haven’t seen it, it’s a crime/thriller directed by Christopher Nolan (Inception) that stars Al Pacino (The Godfather), Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting) and Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) among others.

This is what it’s about according to Rotten Tomatoes:

A veteran police detective (Al Pacino) and his partner are sent to a small Alaskan town to investigate the murder of a teenage girl. Forced into a psychological game of cat-and-mouse by the primary suspect (Robin Williams), events escalate and the detective finds his own stability dangerously threatened.

I can’t believe I’ve never seen this movie till now!

It’s actually a remake of a Norwegian film of the same name that was released in 1997.

The movie is set during the Alaskan town of Nightmute’s 82 days of daylight (the sun doesn’t completely set for two and a half months). Al Pacino’s character struggles to sleep as a result of this and he does a really good job of putting across the sleep depravation he’s experiencing.

The story’s compelling and the supporting cast all do a great job too.

Robin Williams of course is very good, and the way his character’s story plays out had me guessing how it was all going to end. Again, such a loss of a great and talented actor!

Definitely worth a watch if you like your crime thrillers. 👌

Seen it? What do you think? 🤔
