I’m not a huge fan of sports films but a few of the ones I’ve seen have really surprised me.
One of my favourites is this one:
Goon (2011)
It stars Seann William Scott (American Pie), Jay Baruchel (This Is the End), Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Eugene Levy (American Pie).
This is what it's about:
Doug Glatt (Scott) is a kind hearted but slightly dim witted bouncer who finds his calling as an enforcer in his local minor league ice hockey team.
While Doug’s career is just beginning, another player’s is coming to an end. Ross “The Boss” Rhea (Schreiber) a tough enforcer from a rival team is on a collision course with Glatt and the fans can’t wait to see the showdown.
It eventually becomes more about the fight than the hockey.
I tell so many people about this movie but as soon as they hear “Ice Hockey” I can see them lose interest. Also, I’m always surprised how many people dislike Seann William Scott because they judge him on his “Stiffler” character from the American Pie films (by the way, Stiffler is hilarious!!)
The film is an adaptation of "Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey" by Adam Frattasio and Doug Smith.
It’s brutal, funny, heartwarming and you should definitely give it a watch!
