Film Composers: Michael Kamen

Michael Kamen

Many films wouldn’t be what they are without the music that goes with them.

Whether it be a great selection of songs that make up the soundtrack, or a perfectly composed theatrical score, music “makes” a film.

As I mentioned in my previous post I rewatched the Lethal Weapon films last week. The music in those films was composed by Michael Kamen (with Eric Clapton & saxophonist David Sanborn). It got me thinking about his music in particular.

Michael Kamen was prominent throughout the 80s and 90s and composed the iconic themes to many of the films I’m sure you will have seen.

He also collaborated with artists such as Pink Floyd, Queen, Bryan Adams, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, David Bowie and Kate Bush among many others.

He composed the music to classic films such as Highlander, Die Hard, Robin Hood: Prince if Thieves, Lethal Weapon, The Three Musketeers and Last Action Hero.

Sadly, Kamen passed away from a heart attack in 2003 aged 55.

One of my favourite pieces of music of his is the overture from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I’m sure you’ll recognise it.
