You might remember, back in January I shared a trailer for a film called Boss Level (2021).
Well I watched it over the weekend and can report that it’s every bit as good as the trailer.
If you missed that post and if you haven’t seen the film yourself, it’s a sci-fi, action, thriller starring Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Naomi Watts (The Ring), Mel Gibson (Lethal Weapon) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) among others.
This is what it’s about according to Google:
“Trapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder, former special forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) uncovers clues about a secret government project that could unlock the mystery behind his untimely death. In a race against the clock, Pulver must hunt down Colonel Ventor (Mel Gibson), the powerful head of the government program, while outrunning skilled ruthless assassins determined to keep him from the truth in order to break out of the loop, save his family and live once again for tomorrow.”
I described this film in my original post as looking like the love child of Groundhog Day, Kill Bill and Edge of Tomorrow. I wasn’t too far off as it happens but there’s a lot more to the story than I’d got from the trailer.
Frank Grillo is great in the lead role (I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of him in that capacity after this film), Mel Gibson seems to just get better and better with every movie he makes and the supporting cast are excellent too.
If you like action, explosions, graphic death scenes, humour, car chases, sci-fi, retro gaming and a good story that gives you a couple of hours of escapism, you’ll like this film.
It gets a big thumb up from The Screen Room Movie Podcast (still no actual podcast...). 👍
Boss Level is currently streaming on Hulu (they’re doing a 30 day free trial).
Seen it? What did you think? 🤔
