Josh Brolin, looking considerably less threatening as his mad Titan in alter ego, Thanos.
Here he is on set wearing his motion-capture suit and presumably, a scale reference torso for the “you should’ve gone for the head” scene.
Thanos has appeared multiple times within the MCU, the first time being during the mid-post-credit scene of Avengers Assemble (2012).
If you’re a sharp-eyed Marvel movie fan you might’ve noticed that the character’s appearance changed a bit leading up to his more prominent role in Avengers: Infinity War. One of the reasons for that is because he was originally played by a completely different actor.
That’s right, in his very first appearance in Avengers Assemble, Thanos wasn’t played by Goonies favourite Josh Brolin at all but rather an actor called Damion Poitier.
A shed load of prosthetics were applied to Poitier’s face in order for him to look like Thanos (or at least an earlier version of him) for just a few seconds at the end of the first Avengers movie.
Although Poitier wouldn’t play Thanos again, Avengers Assemble wasn’t his last appearance in a Marvel film. He later played one of Crossbones’ mercenaries in Captain America: Civil War (2016).
So why did they recast him?
Well unlike previous recasts within the MCU this one wasn’t down to any personal disputes. It was simply that during those early stages in the bigger story, Marvel Studios just hadn’t yet found the actor they wanted to play Thanos going forward.
Poitier did more than a good enough job to tease his arrival though, even though it was eventually Brolin who brought the character to life.
“In all my years of conquest, violence, slaughter...it was never personal. But I’ll tell you now, what I’m about to do to your stubborn, annoying little planet...I’m gonna enjoy it, very very much.”
