Addicted to Love (1997)

It’s day 3 of my Valentine's Day Movie Countdown and today’s guilty pleasure is:

Addicted to Love (1997)

This is probably my favourite Meg Ryan movie. In the late 80s and throughout the 90s she was the queen of the romcom and yet for some reason I never hear anyone talk about this one.

It stars Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Meg Ryan (Sleepless in Seattle), Kelly Preston (Twins) and Tchéky Karyo (Bad Boys) among others.

This is what it’s about:

Sam (Broderick), a small-town astronomer is devastated when his fiancée, Linda (Preston), sends him a letter saying that she’s decided to stay in New York where she’s been on a teaching fellowship. Distraught and determined to change her mind, he travels to New York to find that she’s now in a relationship with Anton, a French chef (Karyo).

He moves into an abandoned apartment across the street where he can spy on them and when Anton’s ex fiancé, Maggie (Ryan) turns up looking for revenge, the two jilted lovers team up and hatch a plan to destroy the new couple’s relationship.

I was so in love with Meg Ryan after watching this film! I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen it over the years.

The story is really funny and each cast member plays their part brilliantly! It’s Tchéky Karyo though who steals the show, he’s hilarious! I’d only seen him in Bad Boys before this so it was surprising to see him pulling off a comedy role so well.

The film’s score, composed by Rachel Portman is also really good and the track “Painting the Wall” is beautiful! 👌

Let me know if you’ve seen this one and if you haven’t and can find it somewhere, it’s well worth a watch. 👍
